Our Ecuador mission trip began with a simple question: “How can we pray for you?” In 2010, a team from First Baptist traveled to Ecuador to share the Gospel, and as they listened to the people, they heard a common need—many had not seen a doctor in years. That moment sparked something bigger. By 2011, a medical mission was born, combining compassionate healthcare with the life-changing message of Jesus Christ.

Today, this mission continues through the leadership and dedication of faithful servants. Bobbie Smith, a retired pastor from Holly Springs, and Brad McWhorter, an RN from First Baptist, help guide the medical team. On the ground in Ecuador, Guillermo and Elvia faithfully serve year-round—coordinating logistics, connecting with communities, and handling the necessary government arrangements that make this mission possible.

Each day on the trip brings a new opportunity to serve. Our team travels to different communities, often arriving to find people already waiting. We step into whatever space is available—sometimes a small church, other times a simple community center—and transform it into a place of care, hope, and healing.

While the clinic is being set up, every person is invited to hear the Gospel. This is the heart of everything we do. Medical care may open the door, but Jesus is the reason we are there.

The clinic itself offers a variety of care stations. Each person begins with triage, where basic vitals are taken and needs are assessed. From there, they may receive care from a nurse or physician, addressing common issues such as joint pain from hard labor, eye irritation from sun and ash, allergies, or digestive concerns. Additional support may include physical therapy, dental care like cleanings or extractions, and access to reading glasses—often a simple but deeply meaningful gift.

A pharmacy station ensures patients receive needed medications, carefully tracked in accordance with government regulations. Mental health and counseling support is also available for those in need, offering care for both body and mind.

Beyond medical care, each person is blessed with small but meaningful items like socks, sunglasses, chapstick, lotion, and toothbrushes, along with deworming medication. There is also a special space for children to play, make crafts, and simply enjoy being kids.

Throughout the day, there is always time for prayer. Whether with a nurse, a team member, or a leader, we take every opportunity to encourage and lift people up. This mission is not just about meeting physical needs—it’s about sharing the love and hope of Christ in every interaction.

Each year brings its own unique moments. In 2025, the team had the joy of celebrating with Guillermo and Elvia as they prepared to welcome their daughter, Aria Grace, born later that year.

How can the church help?

Not everyone is called to travel, but everyone can be part of this mission. You can support by praying for the team, the communities, and the work being done. You can give financially to help cover travel and ministry costs. You can donate items that will bless those we serve. And you can encourage those going—reminding them they are not alone.

Together, we are making an impact—serving others, sharing the Gospel, and being the hands and feet of Jesus in Ecuador.

Thank you,
